United were hoping to quell the faintest tinge of doubt about their reaching the next round, PSV having won 3-1 in Eindhoven three weeks earlier. That night Sir Alex Ferguson had rotated his team to the point of breaking a thread on the screw, but last night a full-strength United sought to remind the Dutch what the English champions were made of.
Pre-fight posturing apart, United knew that they needed to defeat PSV by a margin to sway any head-to-head decision should the teams finish level on points. Ideally they required an early goal. One duly arrived after eight minutes.
